Do you believe in Sola Scriptura?
I hold to the EMMC confession of faith. "We believe that the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God, the final authority for faith and life."
With that being said there is a danger I see with the statement "sola Scriptura" - which means scripture alone. I need others to help me read and understand the bible. Most definitely I need to read/study the bible personally. However I need to be in conversation with others to insure that I have understood it correctly. "Scripture alone" can sometimes lead me to the faulty and arrogant belief that my interpretation of the bible is inspired and infallible.
Interesting... Steve Lawson had an excellent message about this very topic (The Puritan Commitment to Sola Scriptura) back in October at the Strange Fire Conference. As Lawson correctly states, “This book (the Bible) is not hard to understand. I would agree that for the most part that the bible is not hard to understand just hard to swallow. However that statement does raise the question that if it is so easy to understand why are there so many denominations? There are parts that are not so easy to understand. Two quick examples: Jesus compares a Canaanite woman to a dog (Matthew 15:21-28) and Paul says "women will be saved through child-bearing" (1 Timothy 2:15). There are ways to understand these texts but I might call it hard. At least a little more than just "hard to swallow".
